Methodology and Models
In depicting this set of sites individually and as a whole, my aim was to accurate in abstractions and add context with photographic content, whether alone or in collage. I used oblique aerials and parallel views in my drawings to provide scale and temporal comparison. In combination with the written description, I wanted to provide a cohesive physical route, and progress the narratives about the intrigue of this forbidden place. To this end, I consulted many archaeological and ecological reports to gain spatial and historical context where so many of them are overlapping. I have collected an overwhelming amount of data on the site, which is so vast and varied that trying to subdivide it was a task in itself.
I plan to CNC route a model of the entire site before the gallery review. The model I currently have completed is of the Old Shooting Pond at AOC #1, which is cast in concrete. I aimed to use materiality to express my perception of the site; Both designed and formless, earthen and constructed. To accomplish this, I laser cut a negative mold out of wood laminate and surrounded it with dirt to contain the flow of concrete. The result has an indefinitely shaped border, with roots protruding from the base, and a rocky texture due to the aggregate material. I aspire to provide a better sense of scale in the whole site model, which will be difficult when trying to represent an even larger site than this model, in which the 1/16 contours are equal to two feet.
